Loch Caroy Quayside

Highlands & Islands

In Development

Muirhall Energy is proposing to construct a new quay on the eastern shoreline of Loch Caroy, in the north west of Skye. The Site is situated approximately 5km north west of Struan and 7km south east of Dunvegan.

The development aims to accommodate the delivery of turbine components in the north-west of Skye, for both Muirhall Energy and other renewable energy developers. Other longer-term uses of the facility are being explored with a variety of interested parties. Muirhall Energy will seek to maximise the positive impact of the development on the local economy and community, in addition to facilitating renewable energy development.

On 31st July 2023 Muirhall Energy submitted an application for Section 36 Consent for 47 turbines at 200m to tip, known as Glen Ullinish II Wind Farm. If consented, this project would replace Glen Ullinish Wind Farm. As part of the Section 36 application, it is proposed to deliver turbine components from Kyle Harbour. Delivery from Kyle Harbour to the wind farm would be via the A87 and A863. As part of the consultation events for Glen Ullinish II Wind Farm, concerns have been raised about the impact of deliveries on the local road network on local communities, businesses, tourism and emergency services. The proposed quay would reduce the delivery route on the public road network from 40 miles to 2 miles.

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has also been submitted to the Highland Council which outlines Muirhall Energy’s intention to submit a planning application for the quay. As part of the planning process, Muirhall Energy will be undertaking a series of public consultation events.

Commitment to Communities

Muirhall Energy has listened to feedback from the local communities' concerns about possible disruption to the local road network. Following the investigation of a number of alternative delivery options, the construction of a new quay closer to the wind farm site access was considered to be the best alternative. Feedback from the first public engagement events will also inform the ongoing design work, with updates to be provided at the second round of engagement events.

Muirhall Energy submitted Scoping Reports to Marine Scotland and The Highland Council in February 2024 to inform the scope of the EIA Report. A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has also been submitted to the Highland Council which outlines Muirhall Energy’s intention to submit a planning application for the quay. As part of the planning process, Muirhall Energy will be undertaking a series of public consultation events.

"Throughout the Glen Ullinish II community information sessions over the summer we listened to the concerns over the potential impacts to island connectivity. The quay is designed to reduce the number of abnormal loads moving through the island. We’re keen to produce a solution that will not only benefit our project and the projects of other developers, but also the community as a whole."
